U.S. Current Account Deficit:

Structural Causes & Implications

- With Focus on Global Imbalances -

The U.S. current account deficit is fundamentally caused by the difference in national savings and investment in the U.S. It cannot, therefore, be considered a major contributor to the loss of jobs and manufacturing competitiveness in the country. To narrow the US current account deficit, the U.S. needs to beef up its economic fundamentals (i.e. boost savings, ensure fiscal soundness and efficient resource allocation), while pursuing international cooperation to change the structure of global consumption and build financial safety nets.
